New Music Tuesday: Leftover Crack. The Cri'zack if you are down. All the way in the back of the food-stamp line. Straight outta motherfuckin' Lo-cash. It's the Crack Rock Steady! Spawned from the ashes of Choking Victim, spearheaded and masterminded by The Stza, Leftover Crack is quite bluntly, a smack in the face. A smack in the sorry face of what is passed off as Punk Rock (nowadays)... A smack in the face to your senses... And sensibility. Punk as Punk can be is the mythology of Leftover Crack/Choking Victim. Lyrics/songs about Smoking Crack... squatting... rockin' the 40oz... killing cops... hating the Government... suicide... More poignant/biting lyrics than you'll get from any other punk band. Musically, Leftover Crack/Chocking Victim is above and beyond all Punk bands and most mainstream bands. Stza has a complete understanding of harmonies and melodies, catchy as hell songs, but NEVER EVER succumbing to Pop... LOV/CV easily change pace from SkaCore/Hedgecore (OPIV) style Ska to complete Grindcore to punch in the face Punk... On the New album, FUCK WORLD TRADE, most specifically on LIFE IS PAIN, the band incorporates the symphonic sounds of violins and pianos with ease, creating moments instead of breaking moments. STZA's vocal style is gruff and scratchy... He finds harmony & melody where you think they could never be found... Admittedly, LOV/CV may not be the easiest band to swallow, but once you do, it's a beautiful trip. All the melody & harmony of which I spoke is not always easily heard, not hidden, but lay beneath in the layers of music. My advice; listen to the LOC/CV discography in chronological order... Choking Victim, then Leftover Crack. Good listening.

Sahara

At the Cineplex near you, the Matthew McConaughey Penelope Cruz Steve Zahn film Sahara opens and will probably close in a few weeks... Well HAH! Daniel Craig fooled us all. I really thought we'd have a new Pope before we had a new James Bond. Largely unknown, Craig is probably best recognized for his role in Road to Perdition w/Tom Hanks. Personally, I think he's a good choice... Opening Day

Baseball. Opening Day. Day 1. 162 games. Spring, Summer and the October Classic. Evrything is calm in the Universe. Next to Cinema and Music, Baseball is King. As I can't recommend any Baseball music, I'll recommend some great Baseball films of recent film history.

The Natural(1984) starring Robert Redford before his face became leather. Truly a great film about baseball, the love of baseball and boyhood dreams of playing the game. The film is filled with countless magical moments of destiny, chance & fate as perfectly excuted by director Barry Levinson.

The Bad News Bears(1976) One of my all-time favorite films. It stars Walter Matthau and tatum O'Neal. Foul-mouthed kids and a alcoholic team manager. Aside from being a great film about baseball and believing in yourself, the films characters actually have many layers, which ultimately is what makes you care for the team. The screenplay and film are a lot deeper than you may think. The group consists of Dina Waxman (vocals/bass) & Chris Jacks (everything else). The group's song Hovercraft came to my attention through L.A. radio station Indie 103.1fm. Although, if I were B/C-level actor, these shows would be my best friend. In and of itself, watching Poker isn't fun, so I can understand the Celebrity factor... people by nature are fascinated by Celebrities. It's the stakes involved that I don't understand... 'cause there are no real stakes involved. First off, I would be interested if these Celebrities played with their own money... Winner take all... You lose, well so does your charity. Secondly, if they really wanted to put something on the line, how about playing for a role in a Film or TV Show... You get the three actors up for the same part, Winner take all... the role goes to the winner, loser goes home. This playing for charity and it's not your money is for the birds. Heck. I'd give to charity left and right if it wasn't my money. I want to see Celebrity Monopoly or Scrabble. Whether you loved him or hated Johnnie Cochran, he leaves behind him the character of Jackie Chiles, the great Cochran-esque/Cochran-inspired character as played by Phil Morris in the Seinfeld series.

Jackie: "Who told you to put a balm on?!"

Kramer: "The Maestro."

That's right kids, The Maestro.

The Way Of The Buffalo

Poor Farrah, the new TV Land reality series Chasing Farrah has hit the basic cable airwaves and it is... Something Old. Something you should know.

New Music Tuesday Artist is Beck. He returns today with his 8th album, Guero... As it has just come out today, this is not so much a review, but a recommendation of Beck as an artist. Some might say, he has returned to form with this album, reteaming with the Dust Brothers and hopping from genre to genre... Although personally, I have grown to love the softer acoustic side of Beck, much more than the white-boy funk side. Mutations being a favorite and the song Lost Cause, from the album Sea Change being my favorite all-time Beck song. If you like Beck, then I'm preaching to the choir, but if you are curious...

I'm Hooked; The Gastineau Girls

Gastineau Girls. Where to start? I really don't know, 'cause I really don't anything about them. Well, this much I know... And it's not their names. I do know they have a show on E Television (why, I don't know) and they are the Ex-Wife and Daughter of Football Player Mark Gastineau... and I also know I'd like very very much to Checkmate them both. Not necessarilly a menage-a-trois, but each repectively. I also have to admit that I watch the show... I have to... it's a reflex. It's on, I'm watching! And that, I still haven't figured out... A show about a Manhattenite Mother and her Debutante Daughter would never interest me... Why Jesus, Why! Well, the second best, since M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable. Personally, every film Brucey makes should be with M. Night and vice-versa. Anyway, Hostage was really good... saw it Tuesday evening. It's a very taught, tight, action/suspense/thriller... all those things that a good fake film critic like David Manning would say... but for real. Hostage definitely has an unexpected gore/brutally (which I applaud) and at it's core it actually has an emotional appeal as well. And props to a long haired/scruffy Ben Foster for playing against type and being good at it.

Beans Don't Burn On The Grill

Minorites and Anorexia, Eating Disorders Crossing the Color Lines. Always Something you should know. This week, Punx Dead.

This week's Artist is, Conflict. A Punk band from Tucson, AZ., circa 1982-84. I actually didn't know what or who this week's Artist or song was going to be... On local college radio station KXLU FM 88.9, Tuesdays at noon is the Punk Rock Lunch (hour). The regular DJ Brett wasn't in today and I normally don't get to hear the show, but this was a rare occasion... And thank God it was a good one. I don't know the DJ who was filling in, but he was relating a story about this person he knows... It turns out ths person was in a Punk band once upon a time called Civil Death, whom I've never heard of... Most likely one of the reasons being, that the band never officially put out any recordings. Anywhoo, the DJ continues the story by stating that he Googled, Civil Death and came across a website (ShavedNeck) that offered information on the band as well as 'live' MP3's that had been recorded directly from the soundboard of one of their shows... He also said, the site featured 'live' MP3's of Black Flag and Conflict... The site also features original Show flyers from the era, such as this one by Raymond Pettibon, who of course did Cover Art for Black Flag and others...
As Music is one of the loves of my life, it always seems to come back to Punk... Well out of the MP3's on the ShavedNeck site, I really fell in love with the band Conflict. It's really high-energy, '82 era Punk with a Female vocalist... Which is always a plus. The music is very much of it's era, being similar to that of Black Flag, Wasted Youth, M.I.A. and such like bands... If you are a fan of Punk and a fan of the '77 to '83-4 era, you'll love Conflict. So check out the site and download these songs by Conflict... And wish for the most part, that Punk could be this way again. It's a great taste to a long gone time in History... So, I have mad respect for the person who put this site together.

Who You Callin' a Slutskaya

Ice Skater Irina Slutskaya apparrently won the 2005 World Ice Skating Championship. Something Old. Always Something you should Know. This week's selection is a Compilation I made a year ago for my friend Melissa... And I thought I would share it with everyone. It is an all Female Comp., well at least, female vocalists. The Music ranges from newer Indie Faves, such as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to roots reggae/ska artists like Dawn Penn to songs by Japanese artists Shiina Ringo (in my top 5 of all-tim) to French singer Francois Hardy... An even 20 songs to each CD. Each CD starts and ends with the same song by the same artists, just a different version, i.e. acoustic, etc.

If you have all these songs/artists in your collection... I'd like to shake your hand... and if you're a pretty woman with all these records/cd's/7", I'd like to marry you. Anyhoo... If you can, gather all these songs together and make yourself a nice Compilation. Can't tell you how to find all these songs and albums, but if you're creative I'm sure you can figure it out. Good luck... Good listening. And if you can tell me where the "Bitch Bitch Bitch. Bitch is a female Dog... And I'm not even!" title comes from, well... I can't give you a prize, but I'd admire that you knew. Hint/Clue... It's Dialog from a John Hughes film starring Anthony Michael Hall. Oh that John Hughes film with Anthony Michael Hall...

*I'll try to add links to these bands later...

BITCH BITCH BITCH. I've been a little busy working on some other things... Cheating on you readers.

So last Tuesday, New Music with Tegan and Sarah, I went out on the town. I was out at the Saddle Ranch up on Sunset in Hollywood. It's not exactly my crowd, that beautiful people and want to be part of the beautiful crowd people. Where you have to assume, well at least I do, that your pretty Hostess and Waitress are aspiring actresses. And hey, why not. Why not be in Hollywood and be discovered by someone in the Biz... It's been working that way since Talkies pushed aside Silent Films. The funny thing is, aside from Saddle Ranch being "Hollywood", it attracts tourists... the kind that all where the same T-Shirts from the recently visited Theme park kind... at least this night.

Here's the Saddle Ranch.

It's Western motif... in and out. I've only been there for drinks, this being my second time around. The first was about a year and I can say, I didn't dig it man. Not my scene as I mentioned before. This Tuesday night was better... Karaoke and Mechanical bull riding... yes, Saddle Ranch has a mechanical bull inside. Beside the beautiful people, I suppose that's part of allure.

"Star" sighting. As I walked in, went to the bar got a drink and a table (by the bar). Ethan Embry was sitting at the bar. A mohawked Ethan Embry. For those that don't know, Ethan Embry has been in such films as Vegas Vacation, Empire Records, That Thing You Do, the Fox TV show Freaky Links and recently Dragnet. He was having some dinner with a couple of people. Some pretty girl, that I think he did not know introduce herself... I would've talked to her... Anway, as he and his friend left, she ended up walking out the back door with them. If that's what Vegas Vacation can get you, I wouldn't complain.

More Later... I don't think much else happened last week. Did see Kill Bill vol. 2 Friday night... Midnight screening at .The Bridge: Cinema de Lux. I have more to say about KB vol. 2.

Saturday night... Planned just to have a dinner with one of my friends, but as we were walking down the Main St. in Seal Beach he said let's go in this bar to look for this friend of his... Well, we did two quick Jaeger Bombs and the night was off. We never ate food, well at least 'til about 1 a.m. The Funny things is, my friend doesn't remember half the night and he doesn't remember eating and the next morning he had to get up and run the L.A. Marathon. He's a trooper though... he ran 3 mils. in 30 mins. hungover... he did puke though, but that's expected.

Saddle Ranch

New Music Tuesday: Smoosh

Smoosh. If you don't know who they are, you should. What were you doing at 10 and 12 years old... Probably not more than the average bear... And you definitely weren't writing, recording songs and touring the country in a band.

Smoosh is a sister combo made up of Asy & Chloe, 13 & 11 and they write the coolest Indie Pop songs... By no means are the duo writing the most perfectly crafted songs ever or are they the best musicians, but that is part of the charm... Pop songs with imperfect Verse/Chorus/Verse and broken harmonies. Simple, but not simplistic. Asy plays keyboards and sings... Her voice is all together confident, but timid. And Chloe's drums are odd in a good way... And that's because according to Asy, they "make up songs", as opposed to writing songs. Don't know much about Tegan and Sara except that they are sisters... from Canada, Tegan is a virgo and Sara was born in 1980 (all this I read from their bio).

The song in question and the only song of thiers I know is, Walking With a Ghost, from their fourth studio album So Jealous (released Sep. 14, 2004). Walking with a Ghost is a cool Indie pop song, but has somewhat of a somber tone... If this song is any indication of their albums, then it's a good sign, as all songs are written by Tegan and Sara.

Go to their official website and read through it... it's a good read.

Oscar Picks

Here's my Oscar picks, wanted to get this in before the big show started.

Picture - MILLION DOLLAR BABY
Director - MARTIN SCORSESE
Actress - HILLARY SWANK
Actor - JAMIE FOXX
Supporting Actress - CATE BLANCHETT
Supporting Actor - MORGAN FREEMAN

I might be off this year... Not because of any of the controversey of the film being Pro-Assisted Suicide... It just didn't interest me from day one, whence I saw the trailer. Nothing against Women boxers, Clint Eastwood or Morgan Freeman... Anyway, my friend was interested in seeing it prior to the Oscars, which is today. So we checked it out and for the most part, I thought it was a silly film... The screenplay was pretty laughable. I wonder if the screenwriter had ever watched any boxing... Almost everythingin the film is completely ridiculous, from the character going from novice boxer to world champion to her charicature hill-billy family. And I know the filmmakers wanted me to feel bad when Hillary Swank becomes paralyzed, and I was, but I can't go along with Clint's character killing her... and going off and having a peaceful life and eating lemon merangue pie. Now, normally I wouldn't post anything like this but, it was comical and I could get proof. The story goes... The other day at work I was making a pit stop to the restroom (the Men's) and as I passed the Women's bathroom I noticed a handwritten sign (in pink highlighter ink), the sign read "Watch you step. Someone had a accident. Watch your step!!!"

My first thought is that the floor was slippery and someone had actually injured themselves... My second thought was that someone had an "accident' as in the photos. Why? You ask would I assume that someone had a fecal matter accident. Well, because this isn't the time that something like this has occurred at my work... and in the Women's bathroom.

Watch Your Step!!! part deux-deux

You also might be asking had I snap these the photos... Yes, I was there and Yes, I am name dropping and Yes, I'll do it again when I have the chance. Anyway, I was introduced to Matt through a friend and he was a very cool guy... talked briefly about his music and told me that I should come check him out at his next show. Since then, I have missed two of his shows, but have "purchased" his self-titled 5-song EP, which is produced by No Doubt's, Tom Dumont. It has a folksy, sometimes bluesy feel, but not in a bad way... A litte harmonica and acoustic guitar never hurt anyone. The lead song and my personal favorite, Astair, is a pretty little ditty... Matt, his guitar and a some harpsichord. They all seemed to be pretty disappointed with the film. I on the other hand, was neither in love with it nor did I dislike it... Thought Keanu was good. I think he has found his character; The morose, preoccupied, reluctant Hero. And with that being said, it isn't that his acting is stiff, as we have scene in other films, but characters such as Neo & Constantine suit him well. The film on the other hand, a darkly comic FX film, was a bit convuluted... and suffered from it's pacing (medium paced throughout)... I think cutting about ten minutes from the film could have helped. I liked it, and would only marginally recommend Constantine, because I don't think most film-goers would dig it.

Low Emission

It's Friday... left work early because I can.
